LORAIN -- Students at Southview High School will plant two spruce trees tomorrow in memory of Carmen Navarro and Virginia Velez, two students who lost their lives while enrolled at the school. |
The
trees will be planted during the dedication of Angels Acres, a grassy
area near the front of the school, where students and staff who die
during their years at the school are to be honored. The mothers of Carmen and Virginia will speak, along with Southview Principal Ray Pagan and Student Council member Sarah Perrigan, a friend of the two young women. Bronze plaques will be placed at the base of the trees. The idea for the memorial area grew from the desire of many students to remember the two young women, according to Student Council member Greg Holcomb. ''It's something that will always be there,'' said Perrigan, a sophomore, who will read a poem for her two friends at the ceremony. Perrigan, who discussed the idea with the families of Virginia and Carmen, said both families were pleased the girls will be remembered in this way. Carmen died in June 1999 after a long struggle with cancer. Virginia was murdered last November. While tomorrow's ceremony will honor the two former students, the student council intends to continue Angels Acres. But Holcomb said he hopes there will be no more tragic losses that require the planting of additional trees. The ceremony will be held tomorrow at 6 p.m. in front of the school. serrington@morningjournal.com |
